How to Choose a Memory Support Program
The process for choosing the right program can be simplified if you know what to look for and what questions to ask. In preparation, it’s important to know what budget you are working within as well as your expectations for the person’s care.
The following checklist will help you evaluate the quality of the program and community you are considering.
Questions to Ask:
- Does the community offer a program specially designed for residents with dementia?
- Will the staff accommodate residents’ personal preferences?
- Are individual and group activities offered throughout the day and evening?
- Do caregivers receive on-going dementia training?
- Are resources available to address residents’ behavioral needs?
- Is a licensed nurse on-site at all times?
- Does the program have a designated manager?
What to Look For During Your Visit:
- Easy access to a secure outdoor area
- Residents’ hygiene and grooming is maintained (i.e., clothing, hair, nails)
- Pleasant and homelike decor
- An environment free from odors and distracting sounds (i.e., ringing alarms, bells, phones)
- Staff communicating respectfully with residents
- Residents are given choices at mealtimes
- Visible staff that are readily available to assist residents
- Ample indoor and outdoor walking areas
- Clean, well-maintained resident rooms and living spaces
